What is the VIQ?

The
Vocational Interest Questionnaire (VIQ) was one of the first career interest tests developed in Australia in 1994. It was the first in the nation to be placed on the Internet in 1998. Since that time, it has a proven track record with over 40,000 people (mainly secondary and tertiary students) having completed the VIQ.
The way that the VIQ has been put together is different from other questionnaires. It doesn't ask you to rate how much you would like to do a specific job; instead, it asks you to rate how much you'd like to do a specific task or activity. This is much easier to do!
Also, the 7 interest categories that are measured to show you your profile of interests are the
same categories as used in the job dictionary called the "Job Guide" (which is available on the internet too; see
http://www.gooduniversitiesguide.com.au/career/search). In other words, it is easy to interpret your results because they dove-tail exactly back into the job information produced nationally within Australia.
Over the last fifteen years or so, we have witnessed thousands of
students become excited about their VIQ results and profile because it gives them (and their parents and teachers) the direction they wanted in terms of choosing subjects, work experience, traineeships and university and other courses.
We have also witnessed hundreds of
adults complete the VIQ which has allowed them to gain clarity on their career direction and then take the necessary steps (e.g. work experience, courses) to move towards their career goal.
The VIQ gives you a choice of
two printouts, both showing your profile across 7 main work interest categories ie:
- Analytic or Scientific
- Creative or Artistic
- Helping or Advising
- Organising or Clerical
- Nature or Recreation
- Persuading or Service
- Practical or Manual
Your "VIQ Gold" report will give you:
- your Interest Profile
- followed by a description of each of your areas of interest
- a list of the job tasks and activities in the questionnaire that appealed
- a recommended list of the jobs that seem most appealing for you
- a Career Action Plan to help you research your career pathways
The "VIQ Original" report however, is not as detailed and simply gives you your Interest Profile plus the description of your interest profile and categories as well as the Career Action Plan.
